Join Australian Traveller for a photographic expedition exploring the fascinating and beautiful Fraser Island.
What happens on the expedition?
You’ll join up to 20 other photographic enthusiasts exploring Fraser, supplied with professional tips and tricks to make sure your photos are stunning and always on the improve.
Learning new skills every day, this expedition will teach you to take better photos of all subjects in all light. Led by a professional photographer with enormous experience in teaching amateurs, you’ll get individual, one-on-one coaching and advice.
Who should attend?
Anyone with a desire to improve their shooting – from passionate novices to highly skilled enthusiasts. SLR cameras are preferable, but anyone thinking of buying an SLR will also be offered great value.
Event sponsors Canon will be on hand with loads of lenses, cameras and printers to check out your work on the spot!
Your Guide
Darran Leal has led more than 200 photographic events to several countries and has had images published around the world in more than 100 magazines, calendars, books (including six of his own) and much more. He writes regularly for Better Photography and Total Image magazines and will work hard at offering individual assistance in the field to improve your photography.
The Program
DAY ONE // Sunday March 9, 2008
Catch a ferry across to Fraser. Meet at Kingfisher Bay Resort at 2pm for a two-hour workshop to help you get the most from your stay on beautiful Fraser Island. You’ll begin with the basics and expand into light, metering and other important photo facets. After the workshop, check into your rooms for the week. Dinner is at 7pm, and at 8.30pm Darran offers an AV presentation to excite your creative interests.
DAY TWO // Monday March 10, 2008
Full day tour in a 4WD on the eastern surf beach. We might even photograph some birds of prey or a dingo. You’re guaranteed great creative shoot opportunities! A fantastic day filled with unique experiences.
DAY THREE // Tuesday March 11, 2008
Morning workshop looking at digital photography and Adobe Photoshop. Learn new techniques that will allow your images to look great, plus some top technical tips.Depending on weather conditions – afternoon drive to either Central Station or one of Fraser Island’s incredible lakes. Darran will optimise this opportunity.
DAY FOUR // Wednesday March 12, 2008.
Morning walk around resort for lots of birds and interesting images.* We undertake a workshop to answer more digital/film and technique/equipment questions. 12pm lunch, with afternoon free to relax or explore. 8pm presentation by Darran.
*OPTIONAL EXTRA // Join Australian Traveller editor Greg Barton on a morning cruise searching for frolicking dolphins. ($65 extra).
DAY FIVE // Thursday March 13, 2008
Final breakfast and farewells, transfers to Hervey Bay airport for afternoon flights.
Accommodation
Nestled into the island’s landscape, the Queenslander-style Kingfisher Bay Resort Hotel rooms sit lightly on the land – allowing island wildlife to go about their daily business uninterrupted. Enjoy the bush and lake outlook from the private native-timber deck. When the day is done, stretch out in air-conditioned comfort on the Queen or King-single beds and reflect on your day. Your package includes hotel accommodation.
Partners
If your partner loves travelling but is not as enthusiastic about photography, they’re more than welcome to join you. Kingfisher Bay Resort has a partner package that includes your accommodation, return catamaran transfers, breakfasts and dinners. You’re welcome to join a full day tour of Fraser from the resort or other resort activities at your own expense.
Flights
Jetstar and Virgin offer direct flights from Sydney to the Fraser Coast and QantasLink has several flights per day from Brisbane. Kingfisher offers courtesy airport transfers included in your package. Please advise your flight arrival details when booking.
*Catamaran times ex-Urangan Harbour Hervey Bay: 8.45am, 12noon, 4pm & 7pm.
*Ex-resort: 7.40am, 10.30am, 2pm & 5pm.
