100 Things To Do Before You Die #064 – Take a refreshing sip from Tasmania’ Wineglass

Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay

How often does the real thing not live up to the expectation that has been built up via photographs, articles and TV documentaries? Fear not with Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula – it is truly magnificent.

The view from atop Mount Amos, looking down on the immaculate outline of Wineglass Bay (surely one of Tasmania’s most famous and lasting images), out to the red granite of Mount Freycinet and across the beautifully blue Great Oyster Bay not only lives up to expectation, but easily exceeds it.

“The vista itself is like nectar from the gods.”
– Suzi Petkovski

But that’s only the half of it. Freycinet boasts wonderful beaches for swimming and surfing, abundant wildlife both on land and in the sea, and many other remarkable walks and views – all topped off by terrific local Pinot Noirs and oysters. Truly one of Australia’s very special places.

Did you know?
Wineglass Bay has been named as one of the world’s Top Ten beaches.

How to get there
The closest major airport is Launceston (2-hour drive).

Qantas flies to Launceston from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, while Virgin Blue flies from Perth, Broome, Darwin, Adelaide, Melbourne and most airports on the Eastern Seaboard.

Tasmanian Redline Coaches offers connections to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park from all regions within the state, including Hobart, Launceston, and Devonport.

TWT’s Tassielink provides coach services to Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park from Hobart and Launceston.

Best time to go
Anytime, but always be prepared for cold, wet weather.
