The Remote Outback

Diamantina consists of two main towns Birdsville and Bedourie, with a third town of Betoota.

Cuttaburra Crossing is renowned for its birdlfe. For a time each year, when the channels are full and teeming with life, migratory shore birds land and feed, this is one of the world’s great bird migrations. (finishing post Birdsville horses / Bedourie camels). Racing is a part of the Remote Outback, whether it be Camels or Horses, it is fun for all.    Thousands of Pelicans breeding on the Lake, this is the largest pelican breeding area in Australia, the lake is filled from Eyre Creek during monsoonal floods from the north. Many lakes and billabongs are situated near Bedourie. Big Red, the highest of the 1100 sand dunes in the Simpson Desert, access is 37 kilometres from Birdsville, thousands of people visit Big Red each year. The aquatic centre in Bedourie boasts a 22 seat therapeutic hot spa, with temperature up to 40c, this centre is used by visitors from all locations across Australia
The Remote Outback – Breathtaking Beauty
Birdsville, Bedourie, Big Red and Beyond, these towns flourish on the edge of the Simpson Desert, iconic Birdsville, host of the Birdsville Races each year and now known as the “ Melbourne Cup of the Outback”. Crowds of racegoers from across Australia and around the world travel to this September event and is now ranked in the Top 40 “ World Party” events.
Bedourie known as the Oasis in the Desert, shares the beauty of the desert and the pristine river systems of Georgina and Eyre Creek, now being described as the “ Kakadu of Queensland” with teeming birdlife across the lakes and billabongs. Lakes near Bedourie are the largest pelican breeding area in Australia when full. Bedourie’s famous Camel Races are on July 11, a “must do” in the Outback.
The renowned Simpson Desert Racing Carnival commences with the famous Birdsville Races on the first Saturday of September each year, followed by Bedourie Races the following Saturday and the Betoota Races on the next Saturday, this year prize money will be in excess of $300,000.
