Assistant general manager of the East Hotel Canberra, Diona Bisa, shares her must-dos while visiting our nation’s capital.

1. Joe’s Bar

I blame my Italian background for my love of good wine – one of the reasons we opened Joe’s Bar at East Hotel. It serves both Italian and local wines, including Nick O’Leary White Rocks Riesling and Collector Rose Red City Sangiovese.

2. Red Hill

I do this walk all the time (south of Capital Hill). I can tell you, once I’ve cursed my way up the 250 steps and then some, it’s worth it for the most amazing views and peace!

3. The National Portrait Gallery

Perhaps my past life as a psychologist comes into play here, but my mind runs at a hundred miles per hour as I analyse the faces, clothes and backgrounds. The National Portrait Gallery never disappoints.

4. Department of the Exterior

This small boutique is a must for lovers of true design. You’ll find Australian and New Zealand labels such as Mild Red, Vale + Ward and My Mother and Me at the Department of the Exterior (Shop 1/Manuka Court Bougainville Street).

5. Truffle season

Three glorious months of every year, from June to August, there are truffle dinners, cooking classes, wine pairings and truffle hunting. It’s intoxicating.
