It’s one of our favourite winter hobbies; sitting on the coastline of this country, up on the headlands, keeping an eye out for the various species of majestic whales as they migrate. However, capturing that rare split second in pixels involves luck, timing, skill and serendipity.
That’s what makes these five images so special. They have been judged the five best photographs this season (off the NSW coast), as part of the NSW National Parks Wild About Whales Campaign.
Thirteen thousand people voted for 69 entries from professional and amateur photographers, with David Reynolds’ mid-air ‘Life’s A Breach’ the winner.
While this competition is finished, there is still a chance to spot the whales heading south, often with calves close by, until about November 30.
For more information see the Wild About Whales or visit the Facebook page for the full gallery of entries.
