An AT review of the Annual Travel & Tourism Awards

The Votes Are In

This year’s Annual Travel &Tourism Awards as voted by The Australian’s readers hardly leaves room for surprises but plenty of tried and tested accommodation options across Australia.

The usual suspects – not that we’re suggesting they’re no good – are: Cable Beach and The Byron at Byron in the large and small resort categories respectively, the Observatory Hotel in the Luxury Accommodation category, the Vibe Savoy for best value and The Observatory Hotel in Sydney as best large luxury accommodation. A relative newcomer, The Richardson Hotel & Spa in Perth took us by surprise when it was awarded Best Luxury Accommodation under 100 rooms. A quick look at travellers’ reviews on Tripadvisor confirmed the verdict: The Richardson has got it right. (It got full marks from almost every reviewer.)

If you know your Best Westerns from your Hyatts and know that Altitude One Forty is not only a geographical locale but also a luxurious top spot up to Grace Jones’ standards, the following winners might interest you more. (Hint: with Valentine’s just around the corner, you might even be able to draw some inspiration…)

In Tassie you could soak up awe-inspiring views on the Bay of Fires Walk, the best eco wilderness choice, fill your tummy with a divine meal at the food experience winner Stillwater Restaurant and the Mill Providore in Launceston.

Out west, the winery restaurant at Margaret River’s Voyager Estate will make you see your partner through rose-tinted glasses with award-winning drops. And in the big smoke, a combination of adrenaline, views and good food are sure to lift you up at Australia’s best innovative tourism experience, the Sydney Seaplanes Fly & Dine Experiences.

If you want to get everything romantic sorted out by somebody else – at a multi award winning destination, you might want to head to Crystal Creek Meadows just two hours south of Sydney. Their Epic Valentine’s Escape is just that with horse riding, gourmet picnic hampers, breakfast, chocolates, dinner, wine and so on, vintage car ride, freshly cut flowers and, of course, a stay in their secluded – did we mention romantic? –cottages.
