Best Hotel

The competition for best overall hotel was fierce, with a lot of venues scoring highly in all categories. But the winner seems more than worthy of the crown.

1. Crown Towers
where: Southbank, Melbourne
star rating: 5
phone: (03) 9292 6666 website:
rack rate: $790  AT rate: $294

Hovering high above the Crown Entertainment Complex, the Crown Towers has a features list that reads like a What’s What of luxury pampering and classy service. Each of its 482 rooms – even the smallest of which is impressively oversized – is decked out with all the mod cons crucial to hotel living in the 21st Century. Immaculate marble-lined bathrooms with separate spa bath and shower, flat screen TVs everywhere you look, walk-in robes with a separate dressing room, beautiful furnishings in muted themes and stunning views of the Melbourne CBD, Port Phillip Bay, the Yarra and the always bustling Southbank below.

Add to that the top-flight dining options of Breezes, the Conservatory, Silks, Mings and dozens more in and around Australia’s biggest 24hr casino complex and you’ve got a veritable city at your hotel room door. Movie cinemas, nightclubs, floodlit rooftop tennis courts, function rooms, the exclusive Crystal Club – it’s all a bit overwhelming.

Which is why it also houses arguably Melbourne’s best day spa. Towering columns, deck chairs, sunlight blazing through gigantic windows on to an expansive, oasis-like heated indoor pool, a wet sauna, a state-of-the-art gym and the full range of rejuvenating therapies are all on hand.

In all the ways that count with guests, Crown Towers truly sets the standard for hotel accommodation within Australia.
