It’s sad to think that I may miss out on seeing some of the great parts of Australia because of this kind of attitude and behaviour. Perhaps I should have gone to these places years ago but, as a more “mature” traveller now, I find that I appreciate the beauty of the landscape in a way that I never did when I was 25.

My wife and I spent 16 weeks in North America about 3 years ago – a fantastic RV journey from Alaska to Arizona and back to Seattle – and loved the American National Parks. We also visited Monument Valley (seen in the background of so many movies) – it is a “tribal park” run by the traditional land-owners. In contrast to the apparent intention of the local indigenous people at Uluru, these people were very keen to show us the area – via a reasonably-priced 4WD tour. I was so impressed by our young guide’s knowledge and willingness to find the best photo sites that my tip came to around half of the cost of the tour (which was a quite reasonable USD60 for the 2 of us for a 5-hour private tour).

If I don’t get to see places like Uluru and Kata Juta before the locals make that impossible, I guess I’ll just have to go back and see the other half of North America. Australia is pricing itself out of the holiday market, anyway.
