The ultimate Apple Isle challenge

A gruelling trek in Tasmania with a famous Formula One driver doesn’t always require hiking boots and racecars, writes Beth Peglar.

Australian Formula One speedster Mark Webber is spearheading yet another Tassie adventure to do what he loves best – keep fit while exploring the great outdoors and raising money for charity.

In 2008, the Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge will be supporting the Leukaemia Foundation and the Save the Tasmanian Devil Appeal. Starting on November 19 in Cradle Mountain, it will continue though Barrington, Launceston and Port Arthur, finishing on November 23 in the harbour city and capital, Hobart.

The five-day adrenaline-fuelled event will push the competitors – including teams from Telstra, Europcar and the Royal Bank of Scotland – to their very limits, with mountain biking, kayaking and trekking on the agenda, as well as abseiling and whitewater rafting.

If Tasmania’s vast and hardy wilderness whets your appetite, but 250km of intense, exhaustive exercise doesn’t, then you’re in luck: for 2008 a guided Entourage Tour has been introduced, allowing people a unique chance to follow the celebs, corporate teams and skilled athletes without even breaking a sweat.

The Entourage Tour includes six nights of first-class accommodation at four different locations, including the Country Club Tasmania, Cradle Mountain Chateau, Comfort Inn Port Arthur and the Henry Jones Art Hotel.

You’ll be able to follow the challenge from special watching stages, as well as talk to Mark Webber and other notable icons.

Also included in the package are return airfares to Tasmania (ex Melbourne or Sydney), all meals, transport, guides and a Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge merch pack.
