AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays

Armidale

Why do we rate it?
It’s a top base for exploring 17 national parks’ worth of rainforests, gorges and waterfalls around the New England Tablelands without sacrificing city comforts.

Where is it?
569km north of Sydney; a 6hr 45min drive taking the New England Hwy; a 1.5hr drive from Tamworth.

Where to stay
Glenhope B&B is a country-style guesthouse just out of Armidale, situated on 60ha of land used for raising champion alpacas. “We’ve had people who go and sit with the alpacas,” says owner Bronwyn Mitchell. The grand, heritage-style Lindsay House is an alpaca-free alternative in Armidale’s CBD. It has a bar and restaurant; you can drop by even if you’re not staying.

How much is it?
Glenhop B&B’s garden suite is $130 a night for two but can sleep four, as can the Conservatory Suite, at $140 a night. Extra children are $30 a night, adults $50. All rooms include breakfast provisions of homemade muesli, fresh eggs, bread and jam. Executive suites at Lindsay House cost $190 a night for two. Deluxe queens are $140; a double is $120. Prices include an organic continental breakfast buffet.

Availability
The cottages are available after January 2. Lindsay House has rooms available over Christmas and throughout January.

What to do
Armidale is surrounded by national parks. To the east, Cunnawarra, Oxley Wild Rivers, Cathedral Rock and New England are filled with stunning gorges and impressive forests. Take the Armidale-Dorrigo Rd to Wollomombi Falls, Australia’s second-highest vertical drop. In town, the streets are lined with historic homesteads. The University of New England owns several, including Booloominbah, a towering 19th-century residence. Grab a coffee at its café.
