AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays in Bundeena, south of Sydney.
Why do we rate it?
In the heart of the Royal National Park, Bundeena is a ferry ride and a world away from the suburbs of Sydney, offering untouched beaches, bush walks and a tight-knit community.
Where is it?
29km south of Sydney CBD; a 20-minute ferry ride from Cronulla or a 20-minute drive through the Royal National Park from Sutherland.
Where to stay
Affordability isn’t the concern – availability is. There are no hotels; you have to fight the locals for use of their holiday homes. An example is Jibbon Beach Retreat, a four-bedroom, two-bathroom glass house.
How much is it?
The Beach Retreat is ideal for two families, sleeping eight for $2500 a week – $59.50 a night per person.
Most holiday homes are occupied by owners over Christmas, but free up early January. Jibbon Beach Retreat has availability in the second half of January.
What to do
Jibbon Beach is good for swimming and accessible only by bush track or kayak. It has Aboriginal rock carvings at one end. Rent a kayak at Bonnie Vale Beach and paddle around the Port Hacking River. Grab fish and chips while you wait for the ferry to Cronulla. The MV Curranulla departs every hour on the hour, 6am-7pm (except at 1pm).
