Braidwood’s Night of Nights

On December 6, Aussiewood is coming to the NSW town of Braidwood, with the 21st anniversary release of 1987 film The Year My Voice Broke.

Braidwood, nestled in rolling hills on the plateau above the Budawang Ranges, is no stranger to bright lights and the silver screen. The Year My Voice Broke was filmed entirely in the rural town and its surroundings. And it now returns for its 21st anniversary on an outdoor screen in the town’s main street.

About 90km east of Canberra halfway to coastal Batemans Bay on the Kings Highway, Braidwood has also been the location for other Australian films, including Ned Kelly, Dad & Dave On Our Selection and Robbery Under Arms, which will all be showcased at the event this week.

The multi award-winning and visually stunning The Year My Voice Broke was directed by John Duigan and explored the realities of coming of age in rural Australia.

Locals and movie buffs alike are invited to bring a blanket, chair or even a beanbag, sit among hay bales on Wallace Street and enjoy the nights festivities from 6.30pm. You might get a chance to see writer/director John Duigan, maybe even star Leone Carmen and, if you’re really, really lucky, co-stars Noah Taylor and Ben Mendelsohn grabbing a sanga from the local film club’s sausage sizzle, as several of the original cast and crew will be in attendance.
