The Clarence Valley Pacific Highway detour to quaint Ashby Heights, NSW Northern Rivers, is number 37 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Meghan Loneragan, award-winning travel journalist and blogger.
Yamba has long been a favourite stop-off along this famous road, but look inland to the Yamba hinterland and you’ll find this tiny gem, says Meghan Loneragan.
“The small village of Ashby Heights sits among rolling coastal plains along the serene Clarence River,” she says, “and there’s a brilliant little stay here called Michael’s Clarence Valley Retreat, which offers ‘luxury eco camping’.
The cost of your stay includes complimentary fishing lines, kayaks and even tents, so you can kick back on your private jetty, throw a line in and watch the sun set as wallabies graze nearby,” she says.
With the towns of both Yamba and Maclean close by there’s plenty to do, but Loneragan recommends Ashby Monthly Markets, on the third Sunday of each month.
“There’s a whole community of talented locals here, selling homemade preserves, cakes, vintage clothing and other unique goodies.”
