Flora King soars through the canopies and gets back to her evolutionary roots, at Australia’s first treetop adventure park Have you ever been to the monkey enclosure at the zoo and, while watching the mischievous, nit-picking, banana guzzling creatures swing hysterically around their cage, suddenly been reminded of one of your mates?

One look at those horrifically human-looking hands hungrily peeling that banana, and there can be no denying that, somewhere along the line, we shared a common ancestor with our hairy friend the ape.

As of December 2008 there is an activity centre and thrill fest set in the fertile green fringes of the Ourimbah State forest on New South Wales’ central coast – only one hour from Sydney’s CBD – that is designed to unleash the inner primate in you.

TreeTop Adventure Park promises its visitors an original, action-packed and environmentally friendly day out, and a chance to get back to the great outdoors.

With a network of over 76 exhilarating treetop challenges at heights of up to 15 metres – including 15 flying foxes, ropes, nets, tunnels, trapezes and suspension bridges – participants at Australia’s first TreeTop Adventure Park can swing their way through the undergrowth, leap across branches, fly through the canopies and monkey about to their heart’s content.

The park has set courses which are two to three hours long and of varying levels of difficulty, so whether you’re a nature loving eco-enthusiast after a gentle meander through the forest, or a white-around-the-gills adrenalin junkie whose idea of fun involves a lurching stomach and a quickened pulse, you will be able to enjoy the experience at your own rhythm and pace.

Before beginning the adventure, instructors are on hand to give visitors a full briefing and to provide helmets, harnesses and other safety equipment. A continuous belay system on the children’s course, from which it is impossible to detach oneself, means kids as young as three can enjoy the ride too.

So next time you’re short of a weekend excursion and want to try something a little different, why not make like an ape and head for the trees. TreeTop Adventure Park promises its visitors an original, action-packed and environmentally friendly day out, and a chance to get back to the great outdoors.
