AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays
Why do we rate it?
The cluster of beaches around Thirroul are reason enough. That this arty, laid-back Wollongong suburb is riddled with holiday home vacancies is a bonus.
Where is it?
70km south of Sydney. It’s where D.H. Lawrence wrote most of his novel Kangaroo, apparently.
Where to stay
Holiday homes in Thirroul can work out cheaper than serviced apartments in Wollongong, and are great for groups. At Bevans Real Estate Thirroul, there are 30 holiday rentals available. The largest sleeps 12 but the majority accommodate 6-8.
How much is it?
Just south of Thirroul in Bulli, the luxury three-bedroom 1/3 Hill St has panoramic views to the beach. When we went to print it was still available over Christmas. When you split the $2900 weekly rate between eight, it’s just $52.70 a night per person. The deals get better the further back from the beach you go. Seabreeze at 2/16 Bath St is a newly renovated, pet-friendly apartment a stroll from the surf. It sleeps five for $1400 a week – $40 each a night.
“Every year there’s a big demand for Christmas properties but we have solid availability for the
rest of January,” says Bevans office manager Amanda Mehl.
What to do
Hit the beach. Walk or cycle along the bike tracks that connect Thirroul to Wollongong, where you’ll find plenty of shopping and cinemas. Back in Thirroul, head to Anita’s Theatre for live gigs.
