A beach break in Sydney with no cars, roads or phone reception in Pittwater, Coasters Retreat, is number 12 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Bianca Spender, fashion designer.
A beach holiday with no cars, phone reception or even roads – and in Sydney?
“The only access to Coasters Retreat is by the local ferry,” confirms Bianca Spender.
Pay your $11.20 fee, jump on board at Palm Beach jetty (palmbeachferries.com.au), and you’ll be whisked away to a cluster of around 50 holiday houses, hidden amid the gumtrees in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
“The boat doesn’t even deliver the newspaper!”
You’ll have to BYO food as there are no shops to be found here, but once you’re ensconced in your holiday home, you’ll find there’s much to keep you occupied, says Spender.
“There is plenty of little harbour beaches dotted along the coast, and lots of bushwalks you can go on. Or you can swim off the jetty, or walk around to The Basin, which has a sprawling sandy beach – perfect for little kids.”
Or, she adds, “you can just sit and be still.”
Hear the tinkle of boats moored nearby, listen to the singing of the wind in the trees, and lose yourself in a good book for a week or so. “Heaven.”
