Far flung eco retreat and incredible indigenous experiences make Bremer Island, East Arnhem Land, number 27 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Lauren Bath, travel photographer.

You won’t stumble on this wilderness retreat by accident – getting here means flying or driving into the East Arnhem Land town of Gove, then taking an hour-long boat trip to Bremer Island.

Once you’re here, however, you might never want to leave, says Lauren Bath – the island is home to Banubanu, an eco retreat of just five suites (from $336 per person per day).

“Five-star cabins tucked away in the sand dunes, fine food and wine and friendly resident pets to keep you company – I found the island, the property and the entire region pretty special,” says Bath.

The indigenous components of the experience are incredible, too.
