The Grove Hill Heritage Hotel on the Adelaide River seriously comes to life one a month, Northern Territory style; number 33 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Jennifer Pinkerton, travel journalist
Grove Hill Heritage Hotel and Museum, 16 kilometres off the Stuart Highway in the middle of nowhere, “is a total local secret,” says Jennifer Pinkerton.
The gold rush money on which it was built dried up but the pub stayed, and though it’s little more than a tin shed these days, “it’s a classic slice of NT history,” she says.
On the last Saturday of every month (dry season only) the place also turns into a lively locals’ scene, with a free barbie and live, family-friendly entertainment.
You can even stay here, in basic accommodation, from $60 a night. (Grove Hill Siding via Goldfields Road, Adelaide River; 08 8978 2489.)
