We were most surprised to find Bondi and her sister beaches – Coogee, Maroubra, Bronte and, further afield, Manly – nominated in this category, but they hint at a trend happening globally: the development of distinct towns within cities. Will that ever happen to our winning beach town, Byron Bay?

Not if the locals have anything to do with it – having famously protested against the intrusion of McDonalds (though later relenting on Subway and Supré) the town has managed to retain a free spirit that people the world over have fallen for, knocking Noosa off its perch as last year’s winner at the same time.
