It’s on again: one of the strangest traditions on the Australian annual events calendar. Not for the squeamish, it’s recognised as the greatest gathering of thoroughbred cockroaches in the known universe . . .
Forget the anniversary of Captain Arthur Phillip’s claiming of Australia for Britain, because we all know that what January 26 is really about is cockroaches and their undying love for competition.

That’s right, January 26, 2010, marks the 29th Annual Australia Day Cockroach Races which will be held at the Story Bridge Hotel in Brisbane.

It’s the most prestigious of all cockroach races, drawing attention from fans of the creepy crawlers from all over the world.

If you think we’re joking, then you should know that thousands of patriots are expected to celebrate Australia Day by flocking to the famous hotel to cheer on their favourite roach.

This elite event is recognised as the “greatest gathering of thoroughbred cockroaches in the known universe” and is the most prestigious of all cockroach races, drawing attention from fans of the creepy crawlers from all over the world.

Sorry, Captain Phillip, but this year Cocky Balboa, Ita Buttroach, Osama Bin Liner and Sir Roach-a-Lot are the stars of Australia Day.
