AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays
Why do we rate it?
Tamborine Mountain is the perfect quaint Gold Coast hinterland escape from the heat of the coast – without sacrificing beach trips.
Where is it?
About 40km, or just under a 1hr drive, from Surfers Paradise. Also 1hr from the Gold Coast Airport.
Where to stay
B&B accommodation is the stay de jour, ranging in style from the posh Witches Falls Cottages to the more down-to-earth Wallaby Ridge and Tamborine Mountain B&B. The latter has four cabins and an amazing balcony with 180-degree views of the coast below. Witches Cottages are five stone self-contained gabled cottages with spas and full kitchens. Wallaby Ridge has three suites.
How much is it?
Not much – even at the height of summer. Wallaby Ridge starts at $165 a night for a couple, which includes a breakfast basket with fresh-baked organic breads and muesli plus supplies to make your own cooked brekkie. Tamborine B&B is a minimum two-night stay at $390 for both nights, including breakfast. A midweek special at Witches Falls Cottages for a minimum two-night stay is $245 per night, including breakfast packs.
There is availability after Boxing Day at any number of B&Bs. Make a few calls and you’ll find somewhere to stay. The first to book out is usually Witches Falls.
What to do
It’s just a 1hr drive to the beach but there is loads to do on the mountain, too. Try the firewater at the famous – or infamous – Tamborine Mountain Distillery. There is an increasing number of wineries with cellar doors, and many rainforest walks. Witches Falls Cheese Company has a great reputation, as does Ripples Massage for spa treatments.
