Riversleigh in northwest Qld is a hugely important World Heritage-listed site and represents the richest, most detailed continuous window into our planet’s past.

With more than 250 fossil sites, including the world’s greatest variety of (extinct) bats, palaeontologist Dr John Scanlon from the Riversleigh Fossil Centre calls it outstanding on a world scale, adding that he “can’t think of anything comparable.” His advice is to explore the area without lurking around largely unmarked fossil sites with the sun beating down. And that’s where the Outback at Isa complex comes in. Not only can you find lots of fossils here and learn of Riversleigh’s historic value, you can also explore the world of underground mines – and all that with air conditioning.

Did you know? // Fossils aren’t chipped painstakingly from the rock, but extracted with a chemical reaction similar to the one that puts fizz in a vitamin tablet (with baking soda).
