The perfect sleepy-town beach break in Queensland’s Tropical North, Oak Beach; number 70 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Naomi Simson, RedBalloon founding director.

Sometimes getting away from it all doesn’t have to mean getting off the beaten track. Naomi Simson, whose new book Live What You Love was released in March, reckons she’s found the perfect hideaway, smack bang in the middle of Far North Queensland’s most popular getaway destinations, Cairns and Port Douglas.

Despite its prime location, however, there’s not much to the sleepy community of Oak Beach – it’s mostly just a collection of beach houses.

“There’s something about it that makes me instantly relax, in a way I can’t seem to when I’m closer to home,” Simson muses. “It’s close, but remote. Pure Australia.”

Her favourite retreat is the holiday house Tali Oak Beach (from $500 a night).

“Douglas really is only a hop, skip and a jump away if you want to go out on the reef or to the Daintree. There’s everything around you to explore in terms of unique experiences, but I’m just as happy to sit and read a goodbook.”

When the world around you is as lovely as it is here, so we are.
