Some chap named Captain James Cook ran the Endeavour onto the Great Barrier Reef in 1770, leading to a 48-day stay in Cooktown – and his first meaningful contact with the Aboriginal people – while it was mended. This little town is rich with indigenous culture and art, historical museums and monuments, quaint old ‘Queenslander’ houses and is surrounded by lush rainforest to explore. Cooktown is also a great jumping-off point for heading on a far northern adventure – see p58, ‘Conquer the tip of Cape York’. See tourismcapeyork.com
