Daintree’s green gem Mossman Gorge, Tropical North Queensland, number #96 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Penny Spencer, founder of Spencer Travel.

Most people come to the Cairns region for sun, sand and maybe a daytrip to the Daintree… and that’s where they’re going wrong, says Penny Spencer.

“The Daintree is absolutely worthy of its own holiday.”

Keep driving past Port Douglas and you’ll come to an area dotted with B&Bs, treehouses and lush, tropical rainforest.

“Mossman is a quiet town without much going on; Daintree Village consists of a pub, a general store and a crocodile tour; and you can drive up to Cooktown, if you like. But the main purpose is to really take in the Daintree,” she says.

She recommends swimming in Mossman River, embarking on the range of “stunning” rainforest walks on offer, and staying at luxe Silky Oaks Lodge (from $398 per night), “which is smack-bang in the middle of the Daintree,” she says.

Even if you’re not splurging on a room, you can make use of this insider tip: the lodge’s exclusive spa is open to locals, so you can book in for a spot of pampering.

“They burn eucalyptus leaves before treatments, make use of native natural oils and all the water in treatments comes from the river.”
