Middleton made the Australian Traveller Magazine guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays.

Middleton

Why do we rate it?
Halfway between Victor Harbor and Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula sits this small beachside town. We rate it for its unpretentious atmosphere and super surf.

Where is it?
95km from Adelaide, Middleton is a 1hr 45min drive via the South Eastern Highway.

Where to stay
Middleton Beach Huts are too cute to pass up. Picture pastel huts, beach umbrellas and sun decks. Each hut is named after a famous Australian beach. We love Bondi for its pinstriped façade and retro carpets. Wenton Farm Holiday Cottages are out of town on a 45ha beef property, where cottages are fenced in and the cows wander around.

How much is it?
The Bondi hut is $150 a night for two but sleeps four – extra people $20 each. Torquay and Scarborough both sleep four and have a separate lounge area for a little more space at $210 a night for two people. The bottle of bubbly on arrival and daily breakfast provisions in each hut sweeten the deal. Wenton Farm’s Lavender Cottage sleeps two for $110 a night. Grevillea Cottage is $155, sleeping four.

Availability
You may not be able to book your favourite beach hut, but when we went to press there were several left during January. Owner Sonya says you should book at least a month in advance for Christmas. Wenton Farm gets busy over Christmas but has plenty of availability during January.

What to do
Middleton is known for surfing, swimming, kite flying and whale watching. The beachside town has boutique shops and restaurants. Follow the Encounter Pathway bike track all the way to Victor Harbor through Port Elliot.
