AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays

Kangaroo Island

Why do we rate it?
Beaches, bush, pristine nature and farmland make Kangaroo Island a marvel to explore.

Where is it?

Kangaroo Island is 112km south-west of Adelaide, a 30min flight from the city. It is 16km off the coast and a 40min ferry ride from Cape Jervis.

Where to stay

Lodges and homesteads set back from the coast are the most affordable options. Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat sits at the entrance to Flinders Chase National Park and has a range of rooms from suites to lodges. Timber Creek Lodge near Parndana has eight bedrooms with dorm-style sleeping.

How much is it?

Basic lodge rooms at KI Wilderness Retreat are $190 a night for two. The Lodge Apartment is $250 a night and sleeps five. Timber Creek Lodge beds are $30 a night in the dorms or $60 a night for two in a private double.

Book before the end of November to bag yourself a room at KI Wilderness Retreat over Christmas. Lodge rooms sell out first. Timber Creek Lodge has excellent availability so even the most last-minute of bookers could get lucky.

What to do

There’s no shortage of beaches or hiking trails on the island. Head to Stokes, Vivonne and Pennington Bays for surfing, fishing and sailing. Go diving at the shipwrecked Portland Maru freighter or visit sea lion, pelican and penguin colonies.
