Australian Traveller Magazine’s 100 Great Australian Holiday Homes Right on the outskirts of Burnie in northern Tasmania, Hide-away Cottage Retreat is the perfect spot for exploring a town that still does things the way they used to be done: the right way!

Handmade paper, cheese making, farmers markets and hospitality are just some of the things down the road from this rural sanctuary that still has sheep grazing in its front yard.

In the opposite direction, Hide-away Cottage acts as a great stepping-stone or relaxing pit-stop before hitting the rat race again, for two of Australia’s great wilderness areas: Cradle Mountain and the Tarkine. The wood fire will warm any toes frozen from the nights wandering these ecological wonders, while alternatively the space, the trees, the grass and the tree-swing all scream “bring the kids and let them run amok”.

Unlike some of the more exalted members of this list, Hide-away Cottage will not need you to take out another mortgage just to afford a few extra nights of country decency.
