Australian Traveller’s first-ever Readers’ Choice Awards for 2011; results for Best Adventure Holiday Destination in Australia.  THE WINNER:

OVERLAND TRACK
Winding through the spectacular Cradle Mountain-Lake Sinclair National Park in Tasmania, this is one of Australia’s most famous wilderness walks. It’s also one of the most successful attempts to promote sustainable tourism. End-to-end, the walk takes six days. You can do it yourself (there is a fee of $180 per person, plus park entry fees), or join a guided tour group. Peak walking season is November 1 to April 30. You reckon it’s the best adventure holiday thanks to its “spectacular alpine scenery”. One reader took a couple of overseas guests on a DIY walk and reports, “We got to show them some of our unique wildlife, including two wombats within 50 metres of starting the walk, a platypus paddling in the creek while we were waiting for the ferry at Lake St Claire, and an echidna waiting for us when we got off the ferry.” Says another reader, “Where else in the world can you let yourself become so detatched from everyday life?”
