AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays

Why do we rate it?
Great Otway National Park rainforest hugs the sea at Lorne, a stunning stop on the Great Ocean Road. Then there’s the watersport-friendly Erskine River.

Where is it?
140km west of Melbourne, Lorne is a 2hr drive west on the Great Ocean Road.

Where to stay
Lorne Foreshore Caravan Park owns five parks offering more than 600 campsites. There are cabins, cottages, and sites available at Erskine River Park, Ocean Road Camping Ground, Kia Ora Park, Top Bank Camping Ground and Queens Park Camping Ground. Holiday cottages abound in Lorne. Cherry Tree Creek Cottages are quaint, rural cabins at the back of town. Great Ocean Road Holidays has a variety of homes and apartments available.

The parks are heavily booked but you might find availability for the second half of January. Some Cherry Tree Creek Cottages are available over Christmas and January. Great Ocean Road Holidays has two-week minimum stays during summer with limited availability after Christmas.

How much is it?

The Caravan Park’s Erskine Cabins sleep five and cost $130 a night. Sacrifice an ensuite with an Otway Cabin sleeping six for $115 a night, or camp for $50 a night. Cherry Tree Creek Cottages cost $1500 a week sleeping three, or $180 a night for a studio. Frangipani at 30 Waverley Ave, from Great Ocean Road Holidays, is $4500 for two weeks sleeping five – that’s $65 each a night.

What to do
Lorne has a sprawling beachfront backed by bush, so there are activities for everyone. Two major events – the Mountain to Surf run and Pier to Pub swim – take place January 7-8. Swimming and surfing are popular at the 2km-long main beach. It’s a short walk from here to Erskine River for fishing, canoeing and paddle boating. Erskine Falls are 8.5km from the beach. The spectacular 30m drop is worth the walk.
