AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays

Mildura

Why do we rate it?
Mildura is the beating heart of the Murray River. It’s a great base for exploring the mighty waterway.

Where is it?
550km/7hrs north-west of Melbourne; 420km/
5hrs 30 mins north-east of Adelaide.

Where to stay
Beds along the river are hard to find, but Mildura Houseboats offers great accommodation, and you can explore 60km of waterways. Family boats have two queen beds, double bunks and fold-outs, a shaded top deck, barbecue and TV. On dry land, try Apex Riverbeach Holiday Park, which offers cabins, campsites and villas. There’s also boat rental on site.

How much is it?
Family boats are $2600 a week sleeping 10. Dinghies and canoes are available for hire – just tow them along behind. Holiday Park sites start at $26 for two people unpowered or $29 powered. Extra children cost $7 a night, adults $10. Ensuite cabins cost $112 a night for two but sleep four (extras $15 each).

Availability
As we went to print, Mildura Houseboats had a basic family boats available in January (luxury boats book out first). Apex Riverbeach has plenty of sites through Christmas/January, with cabins available during Jan.

What to do
Fish, swim or canoe on the Murray; try the golf courses, wineries and restaurants along its banks. In Mildura, visit the brewery and Old Wentworth Gaol. Hop on a historic paddle steamer.
