The ‘it’ girl of Australian travel, the Kimberley, is certainly having her time in the limelight, and rightly so.
Taking out 17.7 per cent of all votes to again win Dream Destination, it seems the region is as beautiful and captivating as it is wild and rugged. Almost 45 per cent of Kimberley votes centred around Broome, with its colourful history, landscape and perfect pearls. There were also many of you daydreaming of four-wheel-driving along the Gibb River Road, seeing the Mitchell Falls by helicopter, and gliding through the region’s gorges on board a luxury cruise.
“I want to see it all,” said one reader, “from the star-studded night skies to the awesome rock art”.
Kimberley Coastal Camp also accounted for many votes, with friendly staff , world-class fishing and exclusive rock art tours, as did luxury lodge El Questro, with one reader saying, “I want to explore that remote part of Australia in the most amazing and luxurious setting that money can buy”. But it was the sheer isolation and beauty of the Kimberley that united voters in their fascination in the region. Isn’t it funny that a place so untouched remains at the top of so many bucket lists? Tasmania – or Tassie-mania we should say – proved a hot contender this year, with bucket list experiences from the Bay of Fires in the east, to the Tarkine wilderness in the west. Second-time finalist the Whitsundays, continues to inspire tropical-island daydreams in third place, as does ever-iconic Uluru – particularly with its outdoor dining experiences. Finally, it wouldn’t be a countdown of Australia’s dreamiest destinations without the world’s greatest underwater wonderland, the Great Barrier Reef.
