Broome gets all the attention but there is plenty going for Kununurra, the Kimberley’s next favourite town, number 24 on Australian Traveller’s ‘100 amazing places you haven’t been to yet‘. Nominated by: Justin Weibrecht, owner of Matsos Brewery
In my opinion,” says Justin Weibrecht, “this town is one of the hidden gems of the Kimberley.”
That’s a big call, considering both the sheer number of secrets in the Kimberley and Weibrecht’s rep as one of the area’s most successful tourism operators, but “there’s just an incredible amount to see and do here.”
Mirima National Park rates as the area’s number-one experience, he says. “It’s a stunning area of rugged sedimentary formations like a mini Bungle Bungles, and the eroded gorges of Hidden Valley.”
At the more civilised end of the spectrum is Zebra Rock Gallery, 14 clicks out of town on the Ord River, where the owners produce jewellery and sculptures from the unique zebra siltstone found around Lake Argyle.
“Buy some bread,” instructs Weibrecht, “and take it down to the river so the kids can feed the big catfish there.” Swim, waterski and fish in the river, cruise up to majestic Lake Argyle, and have sunset drinks on Lake Kununurra at PumpHouse restaurant.
You must also conclude at least one day at Hotel Kununurra. “This is the place to experience real local flavour,” he says.
“Believe it or not, Karaoke Wednesday is the biggest night of the week, so grab a tasty steak from the stone grill menu, wash it down with a few frothies then sing your heart out.”
