I’ve been lucky enough over the years to have sampled most of the wine regions in Australia, but Margaret River’s combination of beautiful beaches and exquisite vineyards would have to be the most magnificent of all. There are over 100 wineries to tour around, so a few wine tastings are always going to be on the agenda, but on my first trip I wasn’t prepared for just how picturesque the coastline was going to be. Uber-white sand and rich-red rocks are juxtaposed against sparkling aquamarine water.
I recommend hiring a mini-van and sharing the driving if you’re heading down from Perth – it’s 280ish kilometres.
There are so many levels of accommodation to choose from – you can go camping or find gorgeous B&Bs and top-end stays. My favourite vineyards are Leeuwin Estate and Cullen. Finding your own faves should keep you busy for a while. Just be careful, because before we know it you’ll be having so much fun that you’ll have the boys begging to come too. But then again, is that so bad? After all, when girls go away we usually end up talking about them anyway.
Where to stay
Splash out at chic and relaxing Smiths Beach Resort (smithsbeachresort.com.au). If money is no object and you feel like treating yourselves, hole up at Injidup Spa Retreat (injidupsparetreat.com.au, pictured right). Both places have spas onsite. You’ll probably be up for a good lie down after over-indulging in all the great food and wine this region has to offer.
