On the way, stop in at William Creek Hotel on the biggest cattle station in Australia; it’s a great base for exploring Lake Eyre. Stay at Marree’s Oasis Caravan Park and Motel, camping from $10/night. marreelakeeyreflights.com.au; williamcreekhotel.net.au

Wilpena to Port Augusta (160km)
Stop in at the historic town of Quorn after leaving Wilpena. See the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre and South Australia’s first sound and light show. Stay at Port Augusta BIG4 Caravan Park from $34/night.

Port Augusta to Adelaide (320km)
Less than an hour’s drive south of Port Augusta is Alligator Gorge in the Mount Remarkable National Park, which visitors can walk to, surrounded by stunning scenery. Afterwards, stop at the historic town of Laura and check out local landmarks like the war memorial, and walking trails through Wirrabara Forrest. Then, before reaching Adelaide, make time to explore the premier food and wine region, Clare Valley. southaustraliantrails.com/trails.asp?id=14093; southaustralia.com.
