Never before have South Australia’s great wine regions been so distilled into their best bits. After reading the following pages, you’re ahead of the tourists and in with the locals. Written by Nick Ryan.

The people of Adelaide have many things for which they can be eternally grateful. The world’s most beautiful cricket ground. The stately civic vision of Colonel Light that has bequeathed the city it’s wide streets and surrounding ring of parklands. Jimmy Barnes.

But perhaps the blessing Adeladians should count higher than all others is the enormous viticultural riches within CBD striking distance.
No other city in the world has the vinous diversity on its doorstep that Adelaide enjoys, which must make it the ultimate destination for any sybaritic traveller.
Bordeaux gives its name to the great wine region that surrounds it and Florence can lay claim to the glories of Chianti. Dijon is blessed with the bounty of Burgundy and Turin points to the grandeur of Barolo and Barbaresco.
But only Adelaide has not one, but four distinct and designated wine regions within an hour’s drive of her CBD. A fifth region not much more than 90 minutes and a sixth, Adelaide’s most distant, makes the four hour drive worthwhile.

As a wine writer these special places are my second home and using my, admittedly not always completely sober, insight along with real local knowledge from those who live the dream everyday, we’ve put together a guide to getting the most out of the wine regions of South Australia.
