The Hawkesbury River may be sleepy, but there is plenty to check out. Here is our pick of the best places to visit, and how you can do it in your very own houseboat.

1. Brooklyn

As the main tourist hub, Brooklyn is buzzing on weekends. The stylish Brooklyn Tuckshop serves great coffee and tea, handmade gourmet sausage rolls, gruyere toasties and organic sourdough. Open Thurs-Sun 8am-4pm.

2. Dangar Island

Step foot on the Hawkesbury’s most populated island. There’s a small beach, a bowling club and a general store/cafe beside the wharf where you can grab a coffee and bite to eat. Get there via the regular ferry service.

3. Peats Bite

Peats Bite is a Hawkesbury icon. Only accessible by boat, getting to the restaurant is half the fun. The other half is indulging in the seven-course lunch ($135), featuring bresaola and duck ravioli. Located at Sunny Corner, get there aboard the Peats Bite boat from Brooklyn ($25 return).

4. Berowra Waters Inn

A favourite among well-heeled Sydneysiders, you arrive at Berowra Waters Inn by seaplane, boat or private ferry and enjoy the six-course degustation ($165), which currently includes rock oysters, trout and scampi.

5. Hire a houseboat

Extend your stay beyond a day by hiring a houseboat. Able Hawkesbury River Houseboats has numerous vessels for hire, from the basic to luxurious. You don’t need a boat licence, either. Pick up is from Wisemans Ferry.
