“The base, the core, the heart of any truly free society depend on its acceptance of its diverse community as equal citizens” said contemporary artist Spencer Tunick.

This year’s Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival will include an installation piece called The Base by Tunick with thousands expected to participate nude on March 1st 2010. After the volunteers undress they will be directed by the artist while the event is being recorded and photographed. The artworks are designed to challenge preconceptions of nudity and Tunick has organised more than 95, site-specific installations globally. The installation is supported by the City of Sydney, and the organizers of Mardi Gras want the artwork to ensure the festival’s relevance to the greatest possible audience.
