Almost dumbbell shaped, the 19ha Double Island (www.doubleisland.com.au) lies just off the palm-fringed beach of Palm Cove.

Reputedly inhabited by Aboriginals for thousands of years before white man appeared, legend has it that Double Island is the resting place of the mythical Rainbow Serpent, controller of the precious resource, water. It’s also been the home of stressed-out executives before reinventing itself in its current guise. These days the only residents are somewhat reclusive guests with deep pockets seeking extreme privacy.

Double Island is an intimate sanctuary with five star equivalent accommodation for up to 40 guests. Garden View Rooms and Apartments have a private plunge pool or outdoor spa as tropical chic meets secluded indulgence beneath the beachfront Casuarina trees. Oh, and if you’re going to book a room, invite your friends and family as well; the place is only available on a “whole of island” rate, meaning your party has exclusive use of the island.

If you’re not much chop in the kitchen, you’d better bring along a team of cooks and wait staff as well, as the tariff doesn’t include catering – although resort management will assist you to coordinate local produce supplies.

Getting There: Private launch or helicopter transfer from Palm Cove.
