AT’s guide to the best cheap accommodation for summer and Christmas holidays
Why do we rate it?
On the tip of the Mornington Peninsula, this small, sheltered town offers a family-friendly vibe, wildlife and a multitude of ways to spend the day.
Where is it?
105km south-east of Melbourne, a 1hr 45min drive on the Moorooduc Highway.
Where to stay
The rows of brightly coloured rooms at Sorrento Beach Motel set the vibe for a fun beachside holiday. Ten-room cottage Bayplay Group Lodge is west of Sorrento, near Blairgowrie Beach. It’s great for groups, with a swimming pool and barbecue area onsite. Bayplay Rye Cottages open in October and are part of a tennis retreat. Hire out all three cottages and run your own tennis camp.
How much is it?
The Motel’s standard rooms cost $175 a night for two, deluxe rooms $195 and spa rooms $215. Extra people cost $30 each. The Bayplay Group Lodge is $1200 a night for up to 30 people; cottages are $300 a night for up to six.
During Christmas week there’s a five-night minimum stay at the Motel; rooms are still available. The rest of Jan has vacancies, too, with a two-night minimum.
What to do
Port Phillip Bay’s calm waters are great for swimming, sailing and fishing. The natural thermal mineral pools of Peninsula Hot Springs are a short drive away. To explore the opposite peninsula, take a daytrip to Queenscliff on the car-and-passenger ferry
