The new self-drive experience at Victoria’s Phillip Island gives you a chance to zoom away from the every day.
Every little boy dreams of being a Grand Prix racing driver. Some of us – while walking to work on a rainy day clutching briefcases and soggy cups of coffee – still do. Now Victoria’s Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit has opened its doors to the public and given the speed-hungry among us a once-in-a-lifetime chance to break the shackles of routine, feel the wind in our hair, and just for five sweet minutes imagine we are Mark Webber crossing the finish line in first place, to the sounds of an ecstatically cheering and wildly applauding crowd.
Whether you drive a Porsche or a battered old Ute, you’re guaranteed to enjoy sitting in the hot seat, rumbling around the tarmac, nailing those corners and slicing the finish line
Phillip Island’s self-drive experience allows visitors – for just $85 per vehicle – to take their own car onto the tracks and drive four hell-raising laps around the world class racing circuit. Whether you drive a Porsche or a battered old Ute, you’re guaranteed to enjoy sitting in the hot seat, rumbling around the tarmac, nailing those corners and slicing the finish line in time for a stand on the winner’s podium, a glass of bubbly and a slap-up lunch at the Champion’s Cafe.
The racetrack allows each driver to carry as many passengers as their car will legally carry, so take your family along too, and show them what you’re made of. And – if the wife and kids aren’t quite as interested in your speed and racing prowess as you are – the adjacent 780m replica Grand Prix Go-Karting track, an interactive games room, the tranquil water gardens and the beautiful views of the rugged southern coastline will at least keep them content for your precious four laps’ worth (until you bore them with your Formula One commentary all the way home).
The Phillip Island Racing Grand Prix is home to massive motor events, including the Superbike World Champs and the MotoGP, which is watched by 350 million spectators across 200 countries. Your spin round the track might not generate quite the same level of press attention, or attract quite so many viewers, but it will give you a chance to live your dream and be an F1 star for the day, and who can put a price on that?
