This stretch of beach boasts a quaint array of colourful beach changing rooms, locally known as beach boxes. The boxes originated in the 1860s and sadly local councils removed many of them from neighbouring beaches in the 1960s. Thankfully, Brighton escaped this over-zealous council clean-up and is still home to 82 privately owned, brightly painted beach boxes – perfect as a backdrop for a happy holiday snap. Just 10 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, Brighton makes a great day trip and the low waves and shallow sand bar make it safe for family fun. See brightonbathingbox.org.au for more information.
