The ‘this should be world famous’ landmark
Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges, SA
Big enough to fit six Ulurus inside and millions and millions of years old, this near-perfect oval looks like an amphitheatre for the gods from above – not that they’d want to amplify any kind of noise here; it would disturb the deep sense of peace.
“I do find it amazing that there are some really well-known inland things to see in Australia, and that this isn’t one of them,” muses Dr Brown. “It’s quite extraordinary. And the fact that it was used as a big holding pen for cattle and horses… it’s got an incredible history. It’s a pretty special landmark.”
Take a scenic flight over the top, and don’t leave without going on one of the incredible walks on offer.
