Our guide to the best cheap accommodation in Sydney for summer and Christmas.

Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs

Why do we rate it?
Staying in Sydney over the Christmas break is one of the best ways to experience the city. The suits are either out of town or incognito in less-stressed holiday mode. The streets aren’t as busy and the Eastern Suburbs beaches – Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee and Maroubra – are at their best.

Where is it?
At the centre of its own universe, but don’t let that put you off.

Where to stay
There are affordable options even in the most glam hotspots. Travelodge Sydney Hotel is on the outskirts of the CBD, within easy reach of Surry Hills’ cafe scene. Coogee Sands is right on the waterfront, with a 45‑minute coastal walk to Bondi.

How much is it?
Book a queen room at Travelodge Sydney 30 days in advance for $140 a night. Deluxe studios at Coogee Sands are $180 a night for two, ocean-view studios are $225. Almost every room has a sofabed – great for kids under 12, who stay free.

Christmas availability is scarce so book soon. Plenty of rooms are available in January.

What to do
Check our story “Out and About: Bondi” (on page 116) for a comprehensive guide to the area. Breakfast on the cafe strip in Bronte. Swim at Wylies Baths –
sea pools at the base of a cliff in Coogee. In the city, explore the galleries, shops and entertainment options while everyone else is at the beach.
